Error Pages
Overview
As part of the roll out of their local news sites to a new CMS Sinclair Digital requested a lighthearted character based 404 and 500 error pages to be designed for when users arrive on the error pages. The page also required some messaging as well as a search option.
My Role
I worked as an visual designer illustrating the characters as well as creating the basic layout for the error pages, working closly with a creative director and developer to bring the project to release.
404 Page
In this instance the client wanted a King Kong approach, the idea being that Kong was climbing the highest building and searching for your content. Initially designed in black and white to match the overall design sense of the news pages it was later changed to color to bring a touch of lightness to the news consumers experience.
500 Page
The user should only get to the 500 error page if something has very wrong and so we had the idea to go with a Humpty Dumpty egg who had fallen off of his wall. The initial design with Humpty Dumpty distraught and trying to scoop his egg back inside was determined to be too graphic so a more concervative option.
